An extremely large number of spam users and teams were detected on the POGS forums recently. By extremely large, I mean more than 90% of the registered accounts and teams were spam.

Preventative measures have been put in place to increase the difficulty for spammers creating spam accounts and teams.

From now on, every profile modification requires a reCAPTCHA to be filled in (one of the simple ones that only requires you to tick a box :P) and the stopforumspam.com service is also being utilised to prevent the creation of spam accounts using known spam emails and IP addresses.

Additionally, a very large number of user accounts and teams are being deleted.

Accounts will be deleted if they:

Have a profile containing a link and

    Have no forum posts and

    Have no registered hosts.

Teams are deleted if they:

Have 0 or 1 members and

    Have 0 total credit and

    Are not BOINC-Wide teams and

Have descriptions containing a link and

The owner has no hosts and no posts.

Keep in mind, these are ANDs not ORs. Accounts and teams are only deleted if they fulfill ALL of the criteria listed above.

Well, I sincerely hope this counts as a forum post.. My Team ( Purdue University ) has but two members here on POGS, but the team itself has many active members in other BOINC projects, I concentrate mostle on LHC's 3 different projects. There are lulls there and when there is a shortage of LHC WUs, I've been doing POGS. Please keep me here and I'll do what I can to increase the WU flow.

Provided that you have at least one host and have done work, your account wont be deleted, don't worry :)
Your team should be fine too, it has multiple members and at least one member has done work.

I presume the case of an innocent just starting their account is taken into consideration. I imagine someone spending time setting up an account before they connect their machine and start crunching suddenly finding their work all gone might be a little disheartened. Generally, I agree with any anti spam measures however, more power to you.

Going forward and FWIW, other BOINC project sites have experienced similar spamming issues. To help prevent future re-occurrences another potential solution that other BOINC sites have used was to restrict a new cruncher or those without credit posting abilities in only one area on their message boards which are usually in a "help desk" area. For POGS, that would be in the "Getting started" message board topic. This way a new cruncher who is experiencing issues can still post and received assistance, and it should be disclosed to a new cruncher or those without credit where they can only post.

Just something to consider.

Hi guys!

I definitely support the spam prevent measures! That sounds great. But it is tragic that it was so widespread.. That's terrible.

Anyway, I am a legitimate number cruncher for the Skynet pogs!

Please don't delete me. Give me more work. :)

Thank you!

Yes that's right, the user removal script should not remove any new users that have registered within the last few days.

That's certainly not a bad idea, I might look into a feature to restrict spam posts from 0 credit users.

Also, for those who are interested, we had in excess of 400,000 spam teams that have been culled down to a little over 2,700. That's a looootttaa spam.

Collatz now requires an invite due to the spammers :(

Edit: I noticed the Getting Started forum has -9 posts, Negative 9. Magic :)

You know, you could resell that spam, probably in bulk, and then use that to fund new resources for the project and if you have a little leftover, send me an ASUS ROG machine as thanks for the idea. I promised to devote at least half it's power to POGS. :)

(For all you naysayers, POGS is not the ONLY interesting and/or worthwhile out there ya know? And if you have a problem with that (pulls down one eyelid and sticks out his tongue... Nyyyyaaah!) ;)
